Seven years ago Pat and I started dating and about three months into seeing each other, he mentioned he might want to get a dog for himself. I eagerly jumped up and down at the thought of him getting a cute puppy and may or may not have pushed him into looking at Golden Retrievers immediately.
Before we knew it, we were on a road trip to Maine to pick out a puppy from the breeder’s latest litter. When we got there, they were inspecting the puppies to see who was competition worthy. These people were real serious about their show dogs! They put Kali up on the table and quickly dismissed her as not being up to par for shows. The moment they put her down, she ran over to us and snuggled. I said, “I think this is your dog.” She quickly ran away and started playing with her brothers and sisters and we couldn’t tell which one she was! Luckily the breeder pointed her out to us. It didn’t take long for us to scoop her up and call her “ours”…technically Pat’s at the time.
Today is Kali’s 7th birthday. Every time I try to remember how old she is, I just think about how long Pat and I have been together. She’s been with us almost our entire relationship. She is the best dog ever! Yes, I know every dog owner says this but all this dog wants is love 24/7. She loves a spooning session and lives for a kids vanilla ice cream cone. She also may not have made it to the dog show floor, but you should see the way she prances when she catches a Frisbee. Definitely a champion in our eyes!
